SINGLE-CHANNEL DIGITAL VIDEO (3:12 MIN)
2023
Night in the Suburbs is a 3-minute 12-second single-channel video made in a residential district on Guangzhou's urban fringe, where dense housing leaves residents with little public space. The camera observes a family gathering beside a road to prepare and set off fireworks. Under the streetlights, their ordinary activity gradually takes on the structure of a stage performance. The work grows from my long-term observation of how commuters, families, vendors and children use a riverbank, roadside and vacant ground after dark. These spaces have few formal facilities, yet residents temporarily turn them into places for meeting, play, trade and rest. The video considers public life as something repeatedly made through small acts of occupation. It asks how people build shared spaces within an underplanned environment, and what forms of collectivity can emerge at the edge of a rapidly expanding city.
Yan Jiacheng is a photographic artist based in Chongqing, China. His practice begins with long-term observation of ordinary urban life and uses photography, moving image, collage and sequencing to examine how social change becomes visible in public space, labour, migration and the urban periphery. He is particularly interested in informal ways people adapt environments that were not designed around their needs. In 2025, he was named one of ArtReview's Future Greats and appeared on the magazine's cover. His solo exhibition A Brief History of the Ordinary was presented at Fotografiska Shanghai. His work has also been shown at Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art, DongGang International Photo Festival, Rome Art Week, Haute Photographie Rotterdam and York Art Gallery. He lives and works in Chongqing.
