APOPHENIA: Constellating ROXANNE through the Atom, the City & the Inverse

Video Essay:

10:50 mins

ROXANNE stands for Real time netwOrk, teXt, and speaker Analytics for combatiNg orgaNized crimE and is a new research initiative that’s funded by the EU at a cost of €7 million.

Its research consortium is composed of a wide range of collaborators, including but limited to members from INTERPOL, the Police Service of Northern Ireland, the Israel National Police as well as our own An Garda Síochána.

Multimedia Apophenia grapples with ROXANNE’s low resolution contradictions by highlighting and undermining the ways in which the technology imagines itself. The work combines the form of diary entry writing and video essay production in an attempt to personalise this, at first glance, abstract, impenetrable and distant technology. Above all else, Yurika questions how computational thinking may be shaping the ways in which we encounter borders, conceptions of criminality and ideas of subjectivity.
